From Grandpa's journal:
On Sunday afternoon of July 14, 1912, we were baptized in the creek just south of Lagoon. This creek ran through Bishop Amasa Clark’s field. The water had to be dammed up by a James J. Steed. As we came up out of the water, I was confirmed by an Edward B. Clark, and grandma was confirmed by an Edward A. Cottrell. We were then members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and were very happy about it knowing we had taken the right step.
Grandpa's first job in Utah:
I was met at the Kaysville station by my Uncle James Smith. As we rode up the main streets of Kaysville in Uncle’s buggy a man was sweeping outside his store. The man, I learned, was Brother James Sheffield. Uncle called to him, ”A good morning Brother Sheffield, meet my nephew just arrived from England.” The moment I saw him I knew he was a good, genuine man. His friendly handshake and his bright, kind, friendly smile made me feel I was among friends, and he proved a friend and a helpful brother to me up to his death.
We went on up the street arriving at Uncle’s home. There we met Aunt Polly (uncle’s wife). It was here I ate my first meal in Utah. After breakfast I went to bed, being very tired. I slept until late afternoon, and before I knew it, it was supper time. I don’t remember what else we had for supper, but standing out in my mind is a large dish of strawberries fresh from Uncle’s garden. Well, we chatted about my trip until bedtime.
I did not lose any time, as the following morning, June 1, 1910, I helped uncle with the hauling of his hay crop. This lasted three days. The next day being Saturday, Uncle said, “Let’s rest this morning,” and in the afternoon we went to Lagoon to a Sunday School outing of the Stake (old Davis Stake). As I looked around the beautiful grounds I told Uncle I would like to work there as it was my line of work with flowers, lawn etc.
Well, Uncle hunted up the head gardener, a Mr. Boylin, and as he was short of help I got a job right away. I started work the next Monday morning which made me very happy. Mr. Boylin also came from England, and he and his wife and family were very nice to me. I worked at Lagoon about 5 years steady.
